This is the only stimulating pattern on Help Me Breathe, and it is the one that carries real physical risk. Every pattern here has people it does not suit, but this is the one that can make an otherwise healthy person faint. Breathing faster than your body asks for lowers the carbon dioxide in your blood. That can make you light-headed, make your hands cramp, and make you lose consciousness without much warning.

Do not use this pattern if any of these apply to you

  • You are pregnant.
  • You have a heart or circulation condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or a history of stroke, aneurysm or arrhythmia.
  • You have epilepsy or any seizure disorder. Low carbon dioxide can lower the seizure threshold.
  • You have a respiratory condition such as asthma or COPD.
  • You live with panic attacks, or you have a history of hyperventilation. Fast breathing reproduces the same sensations and can set an attack going.
  • You have glaucoma or raised eye pressure, or you have had surgery recently.
  • A clinician who knows your history has not told you it is fine, and you are unsure whether any of the above describes you.

Wherever you practice it

  • Never in or near water. Not in a pool, not in a bath, not on a boat, not at the edge of anything you could fall into. Hyperventilating before a breath-hold in water is a documented way to drown, and people have died doing it.
  • Never while driving, cycling or operating anything.
  • Never standing up. Sit on a chair or the floor, or lie down. If you faint sitting, you slump. If you faint standing, you fall.
  • Never combine it with breath-holds unless an instructor who knows your medical history is with you, and never in water even then.
  • Check the session length before you begin. This timer opens at two minutes. If you have used a slower pattern on this site before, it may still be holding that longer setting — open the settings and put it back to two minutes.
  • Stop immediately if you feel dizziness that keeps building, tightness in the chest, cramping hands, ringing ears, or anything that frightens you.

What this pattern actually is

Energizing breath is a fast, rhythmic pattern: two seconds in, one second out, repeated without a pause between breaths. The timer above paces it for two minutes by default, with sound and vibration cues so you do not have to count.

Everything else on this site works by slowing you down. Box breathing, 4-7-8 and coherent breathing all lengthen the exhale or add a pause, and they nudge you toward rest. This one does the opposite on purpose. Breathing faster than your body is asking for clears carbon dioxide from your blood faster than you make it, and that shift is what produces the buzz people describe: warmth in the chest, tingling in the fingers, a light and slightly fizzy head.

It is worth being clear about that feeling. It is not oxygen flooding in — your blood is already close to fully saturated when you are sitting still. It is carbon dioxide going out, which changes the acidity of your blood and narrows the vessels that supply your brain. Some people read the result as energy. Some people read the same sensation as the start of a faint. They are both describing one piece of chemistry, and which way it goes depends a lot on how long you keep going and whether you are sitting down.

You may recognize this rhythm from the Wim Hof Method, which pairs rounds of fast breathing with long breath retentions and cold exposure. This timer is not that method and has no connection to it. It paces the fast breathing on its own: no retentions, no cold water, no rounds to push through.

How to do it

  1. 1. Sit down or lie down first

    A chair, a sofa or the floor. Not standing, not in or near water, not in a bath, and not while driving or cycling. Choose a spot where a faint would be undramatic.

  2. 2. Keep the session short

    Two minutes is what this timer opens with and it is enough. Longer is not better with this pattern; it just extends the time you spend with low carbon dioxide. Open the settings and check the session length before you press Begin — if you have used a slower pattern on this site, it may still be holding that longer setting. If two minutes is too much, pick a shorter run.

  3. 3. Read the safety panel

    The first time you press Begin, the timer shows a short acknowledgement listing who should not use this pattern. Read it properly rather than tapping through it.

  4. 4. Breathe in for two seconds

    Through the nose or the mouth, whichever is easier. Let the belly move first and the chest follow. Full, but never strained — you are not trying to win at inhaling.

  5. 5. Let it out for one second

    Release rather than push. The exhale is a drop, not a squeeze, and you are not trying to empty your lungs. If you find yourself forcing air out, slow the whole thing down.

  6. 6. Keep the rhythm without fighting for it

    Follow the circle and the cues. If your jaw, neck or shoulders start to tighten, you are working too hard: take smaller breaths at the same pace, or drop back to a gentler pattern.

  7. 7. Stop the moment anything feels wrong

    Dizziness that keeps building, chest tightness, cramping hands, ringing ears, or plain fear. Press Stop, breathe normally through the nose, and let it settle. Stopping early costs you nothing.

  8. 8. Sit still for a minute afterwards

    Let your breathing find its own pace again before you stand up. The moment people faint is usually the moment they get up quickly after fast breathing, so give it a minute.

When to use it, and when not to

If you came looking for a breathing exercise for energy, the honest use case is narrow. This is a morning breathing exercise or a pre-workout one: the ten minutes after an alarm when you are upright but not really awake, or the few minutes before you start moving. Some people use it in the mid-afternoon dip instead of a third coffee. All of those are short, seated, deliberate uses, and that is the shape this pattern fits.

It is the wrong tool at night. If you use it within a couple of hours of bed you are asking your nervous system to speed up at exactly the point you want it slowing down. It is also the wrong tool when you are already anxious. Fast breathing produces tingling, a light head and a racing chest — the same sensations that a panic attack produces — and if your body is already primed to read those as danger, this pattern can push you further in rather than pull you out.

Who should not use this pattern at all

This is worth repeating below the timer as well as above it, because it is the part people skim.

  • Anyone who is pregnant.
  • Anyone with a cardiovascular condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, an arrhythmia, or a history of stroke or aneurysm.
  • Anyone with epilepsy or a seizure disorder.
  • Anyone with a respiratory condition such as asthma or COPD.
  • Anyone who lives with panic attacks or a history of hyperventilation.
  • Anyone with glaucoma or raised eye pressure, or who has had surgery recently.
  • Anyone under 18 without a clinician's say-so.

And for everyone: never in or near water, never while driving, never standing, and never followed by a long breath-hold. If a clinician who knows your history has told you a fast pattern is fine for you, follow what they said rather than what a web page says.

What the evidence shows

Less than the internet suggests, and more on the risk side than the benefit side. A 2014 study in PNAS trained volunteers in a package of meditation, cold exposure and "breathing techniques (i.a., cyclic hyperventilation followed by breath retention)", then gave them a bacterial endotoxin challenge. The authors report that "practicing the learned techniques resulted in intermittent respiratory alkalosis and hypoxia resulting in profoundly increased plasma epinephrine levels" (Kox et al., 2014). So the adrenaline response is real and measurable. It is also one small study of a whole training package including cold water, not of two minutes of paced breathing on its own, and it says nothing about whether you will feel more awake at your desk.

A 2023 randomized study in Cell Reports Medicine came closer to the everyday question. It compared five minutes a day of mindfulness meditation against three breathing practices, one of which was "cyclic hyperventilation with retention, with longer inhalations and shorter exhalations" — the family this pattern belongs to. The finding was that "breathwork, especially the exhale-focused cyclic sighing, produces greater improvement in mood (p < 0.05)" (Yilmaz Balban et al., 2023). Read that carefully: the fast pattern was not the one that lifted mood most. If your goal is to feel better rather than more alert, a slow exhale-led pattern has the better evidence behind it.

What is documented far more firmly is the danger of pairing this kind of breathing with a breath-hold in water. The StatPearls review of shallow water blackout puts the mechanism plainly: "Pre-dive hyperventilation lowers carbon dioxide levels significantly. Thus, subsequent elevation in carbon dioxide during submersion may not trigger the breathing impulse before loss of consciousness from hypoxemia occurs" (Bart, Murray and Lau, StatPearls). The urge to breathe is driven by carbon dioxide, not by a lack of oxygen. Blow the carbon dioxide off and you remove the alarm while the hazard stays. That is why the rule about water on this page is absolute rather than cautious.

The exclusion list on this page is not invented either. Deliberate hyperventilation is a routine activation procedure in clinical brain recording, used precisely because it provokes abnormal activity: the StatPearls chapter on electroencephalography lists "eye-opening and closure, hyperventilation, and photic stimulation" among the procedures "performed during the recording to trigger epileptiform abnormalities and other EEG changes", and adds that "hyperventilation is a relative contraindication in patients with a history of strokes, myocardial infarction, surgeries (transplants), acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma, Moyamoya disease, and sickle cell anemia" (Rayi and Murr, StatPearls). The seizure part of that has a named mechanism. In anesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy, clinicians deliberately use "hyperventilation with a bag mask to induce hypocapnia which lowers cerebral blood flow and reduces the seizure threshold" (Reasoner and Rondeau, StatPearls). Blowing off carbon dioxide on purpose is not a neutral act, which is why the list above is a list of exclusions rather than a list of cautions.

Common questions

How long should an energizing breathing exercise be?

Two minutes. That is the default on the timer and it is the length we would suggest you keep. This pattern is a short burst, not a sit. If two minutes leaves you light-headed, use one minute instead. Going longer does not add anything except more time spent with low carbon dioxide, which is the part that makes people faint.

Why do my hands and face tingle during fast breathing?

Breathing faster than your body needs blows off carbon dioxide, and low carbon dioxide changes the acidity of your blood and narrows the vessels feeding your brain. Tingling in the fingers, lips and face is the ordinary result. Mild tingling is not dangerous in itself, but it is a signal that you are well into the effect, so treat it as a reason to ease the pace rather than push harder.

Should I hold my breath at the end of a round?

Not with this timer. It paces the fast breathing only and never asks for a retention. Long breath-holds after fast breathing are where the serious harm happens, because the usual urge to breathe arrives late or not at all. If you want to add retentions, learn them in person from an instructor who knows your medical history, and never anywhere near water.

Can this replace coffee in the morning?

We would not promise that. Fast breathing does raise adrenaline measurably, and many people say a short morning breathing exercise leaves them sharper. But there is no good trial comparing two minutes of this against a cup of coffee, and the alert feeling it gives fades quickly. Treat it as a way to shake off grogginess, not as a stimulant with a dose.

What should I do if I feel dizzy or faint?

Stop the pattern, breathe normally and slowly through the nose, and stay seated or lying down until it passes. Do not stand up to walk it off. If dizziness, chest pain, palpitations or confusion continue after a few minutes of normal breathing, or if you actually lost consciousness, get medical help rather than trying again.

Is it safe to do this every day?

For a healthy adult with none of the conditions listed on this page, a short daily round sitting down is generally well tolerated. Nobody has run the long trial that would let us say more than that. If you are drawn to doing it several times a day, or you need it to feel normal, that is worth talking to a clinician about rather than escalating on your own.
